・How to use translation software to enhance rather than detract from learning.
・Ability to gather, understand, and disseminate information accurately.
【授業のねらい】
The origins of translation software go back to the earliest developments of electronic computers in the 1940s, but it is only since 2020 that high quality machine translation has become widely available. This presents challenges for language students and teachers. In the short term, how should students and teachers use this technology? In the long term, what are the goals of language education when technology is likely to take over many of the traditional functional skills? A machine translation follows.
以下は機械翻訳です。 翻訳ソフトウェアの起源は、1940年代の電子コンピュータの初期の開発にまでさかのぼりますが、高品質の機械翻訳が広く利用できるようになったのは2020年以降のことです。このことは、語学学習者や教師にとって課題となっています。短期的には、学生や教師はこの技術をどのように使うべきでしょうか?長期的には、テクノロジーが伝統的な機能的スキルの多くを引き継ぐ可能性が高いとき、言語教育の目標は何でしょうか?
(2)授業の概要In this course we will investigate the history and the state of the art of machine translation. First we will explore what we mean by "language", "learning" and "translation", while looking at the following questions:
How should students use machine translation to improve their language skills?
How should teachers instruct students?
How should teachers evaluate students' work?
In light of continually improving machine translation, what are the goals of language education?

(5)成績評価の方法Students must complete weekly online activities in eALPs to pass this course. Students will be expected to participate in class and give presentations.
Online quizzes and forums: 80%
Writing assignments: 10%
Presentations: 10%
(6)成績評価の基準The university policy states that students need 60% to pass, 70% for a B, 80% for an A, and 90% for an S.
(7)事前事後学習の内容Additional information will be made available on eALPS.
(8)履修上の注意This class will focus on translation between English and Japanese. To evaluate translation, students need to reach a high proficiency in English, and students will only get better at English by using English.
While we will use some Japanese in class, the teacher will use English as the primary language, and expect students to use English too.
Grade will depend on online activity.
